Brigid

Brigid was the Welsh wife of Gunnar the Blacksmith of the Raven Clan during the late 9th century AD.

Biography[]

Brigid was born in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England, the daughter of Ealdorman Simkin of Gloucester. She was raised in a Welsh Christian family, although, like most Welsh Christians in Gloucestershire, her family practiced both Christian and pagan rituals. After her father's sacrificial death at the Samhain festival during her youth, she was taken in by Ealdorman Cynon of Gloucester, who raised her as his own daughter. In 875 AD, she fell in love with the Norwegian Viking warrior Gunnar the Blacksmith when he came to Gloucestershire to find a wife, and, by 876, she decided to marry him. Gunnar introduced Brigid to Eivor when he came to visit during the Samhain festival, and, after Eivor unravelled and dealt with a conspiracy involving witchcraft and attempted murder during the Samhain festivities on 31 October-1 November of 876, Gunnar and Brigid accompanied Eivor back to Ravensthorpe, Northamptonshire, where Brigid came to live among Gunnar's Raven Clan. They were married in a festive ceremony in the spring of 878.
