Brightwood is a neighborhood in northwestern Washington DC. Brightwood was part of the White Mill Seat land patent during the 1750s, and it was renamed to Peter's Mill Seat in 1800 and Brighton during the early 19th century. During the 1840s, the neighborhood was renamed to Brightwood to avoid confusion with Brighton, Maryland. In 1864, Brightwood was the site of the Battle of Fort Stevens during the American Civil War. Before 1889, Brightwood was only accessible to Washingtonians via a horse-drawn cart. In 1899, however, the Brightwood Railway Company extended a streetcar line along Brightwood Avenue from Rock Creek Church Road to Brightwood. In 1891, Brightwood became home to the first neighborhood association found anywhere in Northwest Washington. The commercial area along Georgia Avenue was redeveloped during the 21st century, and condos were built during the 2000s.
