The Brigantes were a Briton tribe which inhabited what is now Yorkshire in northern England. During the Roman invasion of Britain, the Brigantes allied themselves with the Roman Empire; in 47 AD, they rebelled against the Roman governor Publius Ostorius Scapula because of disaffection against Roman occupation. During the reign of Vespasian, the conquest of the Brigantes began, and Gnaeus Julius Agricola oversaw the destruction of the Brigantes' forts. The Romans built Hadrian's Wall on the border with Scotland to prevent the Brigantes from allying with the Picts, and some Brigantes settled in Brigantes.
