The Brazilian-Portuguese War was a conflict that began when the Kingdom of Portugal attempted to bring several large regions of Brazil into the Portuguese empire. Initially, the Portuguese forces made large gains against the numerically superior Brazilian army, and completely dominated the waters of Brazil, but the intervention of the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom forced Portugal to negotiate an end to the conflict. The result was status quo ante bellum, where Portugal promised to respect Brazilian sovereignty.
