Flag of Brandenburg

Brandenburg is a federated state of Germany located in the north of the country. Although Berlin was the historical capital, it is its own metropolitan district, so Potsdam is the current state capital.

History[]

The Brandenburg region was the homeland of Prussia, which was formed out of the Germans living in northern Germany uniting into one state during the Middle Ages. The city of Berlin was the historical capital, but under the Federal Republic of Germany, Berlin was its own district, with the neighboring city of Potsdam serving as the capital of Brandenburg. It was divided between West Germany and East Germany during the Cold War, but after the reunification of Germany in 1990, Brandenburg was re-created as a single state of the FRG. Today, it has a population of 2,449,193 people.
