Bougainville location

Location of Bougainville

Bougainville is an island located in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean, although it is territorially a part of Papua New Guinea. The island was named by Louis Antoine de Bougainville, and the island had a population of 175,160 people in 2000. During the 1990s, 20,000 people died of illness and starvation during the Bougainville Civil War, during which the Bougainville Revolutionary Army waged war against the Papuan government in hopes for an eco-friendly revolution; in 2005, they were granted their own autonomous region, the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
