The Botroseya Church bombing occurred on 11 December 2016 when the Islamic State used TNT to blow up a chapel near the Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo, Egypt, killing 25 people and wounding 49. The bomb was thrown inside of the cathedral's hall next to the entrance of the building, and most of the victims were women and children; the government investigated the possibility of a female suicide bomber carrying out the attack. The Hasm Movement, which had carried out the December 2016 Giza bombing on 9 December 2016, condemned the bombing. Later, it was revealed that the attack was carried out by suicide bomber Mahmoud Shafiq Mohammed Mustafa, and the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombing.
