Borough Market

Borough Market is a wholesale and retail market hall in Southwark, London, England. The market was founded in 1014, with an earlier market existing in the area much earlier, and a market adjoining the end of London Bridge was first mentioned in 1276. The market caused such traffic congestion that it was abolished in 1754 by an act of Parliament, but it restarted in Rochester Yard in 1756 and became one of London's most important food markets due to its location near the riverside wharves of London's port. The present buildings were designed in 1851, and, by the 21st century, the market mostly sold specialty foods to the public. As a result of the 2017 London Bridge attack, during which eight people were stabbed and killed in Borough Market, the market was closed for eleven days.
