Bologna is the largest city of the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy and the seventh most populous city in the country. Founded around 1000 BC by the Etruscans as Felsina, it was known to the Roman Republic and Roman Empire as Bononia. During the Middle Ages, it became a free municipality, and the world's oldest university, the University of Bologna, was founded in the city in 1088. Bologna has been an important cultural and artistic center for centuries, and it is still a major city in Italy. In 2016, the city had a population of 1,005,831 people.
