The Bolivarian Revolution is a leftist social movement in Venezuela that was led by Hugo Chavez from 1998 to 2013 and by Nicolas Maduro after Chavez's death. The revolution is named for Simon Bolivar, "the Great Liberator", who successfully fought for South American independence from Spain, and the revolution interprets Bolivar's views in a socialist way. The revolution's goals are to decrease political corruption in the country, to decrease economic dependence, to implement popular democracy, and equal distribution of revenues. The motto of the revolution is, "Socialist motherland and victory, we will live, and we will come out victorious."
