Bogdan Kobulov

Bogdan Zakharovich Kobulov (1 March 1904-23 December 1953) was a senior member of the Soviet NKVD during the rule of Joseph Stalin.

Biography[]

Bogdan Zakharovich Kobulov was born in Tbilisi, Tbilisi Governorate, Russian Empire in 1904 to an Armenian family, and he was drafted into the Red Army in 1921 and the Cheka in 1922. He met Lavrentiy Beria in 1931 and was appointed head of the Georgian NKVD in April 1937 during the Great Purge; he was in charge of eliminating officers associated with former NKVD chief Genrikh Yagoda. In December 1938, Kobulov was transferred to Moscow, and he was in charge of the Katyn massacre at the start of World War II and the deportation of the Chechens in 1944. In 1953, after Beria's fall from power, Kobulov was arrested along with his boss on 27 June 1953 and executed on 23 December.
