Bob Hendley (born in 1909) was an American volunteer Royal Air Force officer of the Eagle Squadron and a prisoner at Stalag Luft III.

Biography[]

Bob Hendley was born in New Jersey in 1909. His family moved to Texas, where he joined the Boy Scouts. He joined the US Army in 1927. In 1940, he left the United States and he went to Great Britain where he joined the Royal Air Force as an American volunteer. He was captured in 1941 during an incursion in German territory and sent to Stalag Luft III. He was responsible for finding materials that were necessary for the POWs during the escape attempt and on the outside. He was recaptured when he tried to cross the border with Switzerland on a stolen plane with Colin Blythe. He was liberated in 1945.
