Blackfriars is a neighborhood in the City of London borough of London, England. In 1276, the Dominican Order, popularly called the "Blackfriars", moved their priory from Holborn to Ludgate, giving the Blackfriars neighborhood its name. The priory was dissolved by King Henry VIII in 1538 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and the site of the priory came to house the Blackfriars Theatre across the River Thames from the Globe Theatre. Blackfriars became home to the Blackfriars Bridge (which carries Blackfriars Road into Southwark) and Blackfriars railway station, and the Victoria Embankment stretches along the north bank of the river west from Blackfriars to Westminster Bridge.
