The Blackfoot were a confederacy of Native American tribes in the Canadian regions of Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia and in the state of Montana in the United States. The Blackfoot were traditionally nomadic bison hunters and trout fishermen, and in the mid-18th century the Cree and Assiniboine sold them firearms that they had acquired from Europeans. The Blackfoot also purchased horses, and they were able to expand their tribe as well as their hunting grounds. In the 1870s, the Blackfoot were forced to cede their lands to the Americans and Canadians as white hunters killed most of the bison, and they were helped with farming in exchange for moving to reservations.
