Black Shawl (1823-1899) was a Lakota Sioux woman from present-day Colorado who was married to the holy man Kicking Bird during the 1860s. Black Shawl adopted the orphaned white girl Christine Gunther as a daughter, raising her as "Stands with a Fist", and serving as her confidante. In 1863, she persuaded her husband to let the widowed Stands with a Fist end her mourning period and marry the US Army lieutenant John Dunbar, who had proved himself to be a close ally of the tribe.
