Blacaire mac Gofraid

Blacaire mac Gofraid (909-948) was King of Dyflin from 934 to 941 (succeeding Olaf Guthfrithson and preceding Amlaib Cuaran) and from 947 to 948 (succeeding Amlaib and preceding Gofraid mac Sitriuc).

Biography[]

Blacaire mac Gofraid was born in 909, a son of Sihtric Caech and the brother of Gofraid ua Imair. He succeeded his brother as King of Dyflin in 939 after Gofraid left to rule Northumbria, and he led raids on important Christian sites at Armagh and Clonmacnoise. However, the Leinstermen attacked Dublin in 943 and 944 and sacked the city. A year later, Amlaib Cuaran replaced Blacaire as King of Dyflin. In 947, after a Dubliner defeat against Ailech, Blacaire returned to power as King, but he was slain in battle with Mide in 948.
