Bindusara (7 May 320 BC-272 BC) was Emperor of the Mauryan Empire from 298 to 272 BC, succeeding Chandragupta Maurya and preceding Ashoka.
Biography[]
Bindusara was born on 7 May 320 BC, the son of Chandragupta Maurya, the founder of the Mauryan Empire. He came from a Hindu Magadhi family of the kshatriya caste, and he succeeded his father as Emperor in 298 BC. Bindusara oversaw the conquest of the Deccan and the extension of the empire as far south as Mysore, and he went on to appoint his son Ashoka as Viceroy of Ujjayini. He came to have 500 royal councillors and established friendly relations with the Greek world, developing an interest in Greek philosophy. He died in 272 BC.
