Billy Cole

Billy Cole (1985-) was a US Marine Corps corporal who served under Sergeant Ricky Ortega during the Afghanistan War. In 2009, when General Stanley McChrystal visited his unit at FOB Sasquatch in Helmand Province, Cole questioned why the Marine Corps was giving medals to soldiers who practiced "courageous restraint" (discerning whether to use violence against suspected Taliban insurgents), tearfully saying that he was confused after years of not knowing whether Afghan civilians wished to kill him or not. McChrystal reprimanded him for his confusion and told him to get "unconfused"; Cole later participated in Operation Moshtarak, during which he went haywire and killed two Taliban fighters and one civilian in a local house.
