Ithangka (1822-29 October 1869), also known as Big Mouth, was a chief of the Lakota tribe. Big Mouth led resistance to the United States on the Great Plains until he was murdered in 1869 by Spotted Tail, a pro-US chief.
Biography[]
Ithangka was born in 1822, the son of Old Chief Smoke and brother of Blue Horse. He was nickanmed "Big Mouth", and in 1864 he became a chief of the Brule Lakota Sioux after his father's death. Big Mouth was opposed to Spotted Tail's reversal of Sioux policies in favor of the United States, and he led his tribe against the US Army on the Great Plains. On 29 October 1869, Spotted Tail shot a restrained Big Mouth as he answered his cabin door, and Big Mouth was killed by Spotted Tail's bullets.
