Bhopal (1723-1949) was a state of northern central India, founded by Mughal Empire mercenary Dost Mohammad Khan. In 1737, in the Battle of Bhopal, the Maratha Confederacy defeated the Mughals and gained influence over Bhopal State, and in 1949 it joined the Union of India.
