The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is one of the two major political parties of India, along with the Indian National Congress. The BJP was established on 6 April 1980 as a center-right political party in opposition to the socialist Congress party, and the party prioritized globalization and economic growth over social welfare. The party supported Hindu nationalism, believed that Indian culture was superior to Western culture, supported "positive secularism" (the equality of all faiths, not the absence of faith), opposed illegal immigration from Bangladesh, supported economic deregulation, and advocated alignment towards the United States.

The BJP was the successor of the big tent Janata Party, which won the 1977 general election in response to Indira Gandhi's suspension of democracy during the period of emergency. In 2014, Narendra Modi became Prime Minister of India after leading the BJP in a landslide electoral victory, and the BJP held 279/545 seats in the Lok Sabha, 57/245 Rajya Sabha seats, 1,011/4,021 Vidhan Sabha seats, and 72/454 Vidhan Parishad seats in 2017.
