The Beylerbeylik of Damascus was a Saracen emirate that existed in the Levant (including northern Saudi Arabia, Jordan, southern and central Syria, and western Iraq) from Tutush I's arrival in 1079 until the Zengids' conquest of Damascus in 1154. Damascus was ruled by the Seljuks for decades, but it would become an independent emirate upon the dissolution of the greater Seljuk Empire. From 1079 to 1154, Damascus was ruled by various dynasties, and the beylerbeylik's independence ended when it was taken over by the Zengids in 1154. Nur ad-Din conquered Damascus, and it would later become a part of the Ayyubid Sultanate in 1174. Damascus would be a semi-independent part of the sultanate at times in the 13th century, but it was never fully independent.
