Beylerbey Sunkur of Damascus (1230-) was a noble of the Qutuzid Sultanate.
Biography[]
Sunkur was born in 1230 to the Askarids, a dynasty of Sunni Muslim Cumans. He was a mamluk slave soldier, and he was later enfeoffed as the beylerbey of Damascus in present-day Syria under Sultan Qutuz, the third leader of the Mamluk Qutuzid Sultanate of Egypt. Sunkur had three wives, two of them Arabs. In 1260, Sunkur's territory was invaded by Hulegu Khan of the Ilkhanate, which sacked Damascus and also conquered other cities in the region. He lost the Damascus region, maintaining only the two regions of the Syria region that were not under Mongol control.
