Biography[]

Beth Fukumoto was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1983, and she was elected to the State House in 2012 as a Republican. She was known for her willingness to work across partisan divisions, and she also served as the youngest House Minority Leader in her state's history, only to be fired in 2017 after attending the Women's March in Washington DC to protest Donald Trump's victory at the 2016 presidential election. In 2017, citing racism and sexism within the Republican Party, she became an independent, and she then became a Democrat in June 2017. She unsuccessfully ran for the US House of Representatives in 2018.
