Berulf

Berulf (died 9 AD) was a Germanic warrior who served the Cherusci tribe during the 1st century AD.

Biography[]

Berulf was born in present-day Hanover, Germany, the son of a Cherusci father and a Bructeri mother. His mother was the sister of Reik Gernot Redbeard and the cousin of Kunolf the Brukteer. Raised in the Cherusci tribe, Berulf joined Folkwin Wolfspeer on his quest for vengeance after the Romans killed both Gernot and Folkwin's family; Berulf also swore vengeance against Arminius, a Germanic officer in the Roman Army (and son of the Cherusci Reik Sigimer), for beheading his uncle as he watched, and he failed to kill him in a fight at the Cherusci village. While accompanying Folkwin and his other followers, Berulf suggested that the fugitives seek the aid of the Bructeri against the Romans. They were initially warmly received, with Kunolf commenting that Berulf had his mother's eyes, and the Bructeri listening to the Cheruscians' story of how they had stolen the Roman legion's standard. That night, however, as the Cheruscians slept with Bructerian women, Bructerian warriors ambushed their hut, as Kunolf intended to collect their bounties and betray them to the Romans. While the others fled, Berulf held the hut's door shut from the outside, telling his friends that he had to say goodbye to his family. As his friends ran off, Berulf was impaled through the chest as Kunolf thrust his sword through the door and Berulf's back.
