Berta Caceres

Berta Caceres (1969-3 March 2016) was a Lenca indigenous tribe leader and environmentalist activist from Honduras. She was assassinated by the Honduran Army on 3 March 2016.

Biography[]

Berta Caceres was born in 1969 to the Lenca indigenous people of Honduras, and she was a co-founder of the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), opposing the establishment of a new hydroelectric dam and standing up for indigenous rights. Caceres was added to a hit list by the Honduran Army for allegedly inciting protesters to commit crimes, and in 2013 she was at the top of a list of 18 wanted human rights figures that the army wanted to assassinate. On 3 March 2016, Caceres was killed at her home in La Esperanza, Intibuca, Honduras, having been sent several death threats over the years.
