Bernard Pendleton was an American businessman who worked for the Bank of California during the Gilded Age. He bankrolled some of the largest construction projects in San Francisco, and he married the socialite Eliza Pendleton. In 1878, he met his wife's friend Mai Ling at an art museum, and Mai Ling attempted to cultivate a business relationship with the highly influential Pendleton.
