Bernard Cohn (7 November 1835-1 November 1889) was the Democratic Mayor of Los Angeles from 21 November to 5 December 1878, succeeding Frederick A. MacDougall and preceding James R. Toberman.
Biography[]
Bernard Cohn was born in Prussia in 1835, and he became a seaman in 1849 and worked on sheep ranches in Montana from 1851 to 1856 before settling in Los Angeles, California in 1857. He opened a wool buying business and a loan and mortgage office, and he served as acting Mayor in 1878. He infamously impoverished Pio Pico by tricking him into selling his land rather than mortgaging it; he also notoriously maintained tow families, one Jewish and one Catholic. He died in 1889.
