Bermudo II of Leon

Bermudo II "the Gouty" of Leon and I of Galicia (953-September 999) was the King of Galicia from 982 to 999 and King of Leon from 984 to 999, succeeding Ramiro III of Leon and preceding Alfonso V of Leon in both titles.

Biography[]

Bermudo de Leon was born in 953 to Ordono III of Leon and Urraca Fernandez. Since his father's death in 956, there were succession crises in the former empire of Leon, and in 982 the Kingdom of Galicia proclaimed him king in opposition to his cousin King Ramiro III of Leon. He had the protection of the Cordoba Caliphate, but they later invaded him. Bermudo was deposed by Gonzalo Vermudez, Munio Fernandez, and Pelayo Rodriguez in 991, but he was soon restored and reconciled to the discontents. He fought the Muslims, capturing Zamora, but the Muslims sacked Leon and captured Astorga in 996 and Santiago de Compostela in 997. In 999 he died of gout, and Alfonso V of Leon succeeded him as King of Galicia and Leon.
