Berenguer Ramon I "the Crooked" of Barcelona (1005-26 May 1035) was the Count of Barcelona from 1018 to 1035, succeeding Ramon Borrell of Barcelona and preceding Ramon Berenguer I of Barcelona.
Biography[]
Berenguer Ramon was born in 1005, the son of Count Ramon Borrell of Barcelona and Ermesinde of Carcassonne. He accepted the suzerainty of Sancho III of Pamplona upon becoming Count of Barcelona in 1018, and he was a peaceful ruler. In 1032, he made a pilgrimage to Rome, and he lowered taxes for many people. However, his reign led to the decline of Catalonia, as he was weak and indecisive, and some nobles acted independently of his wishes, as they were angered about the lack of war against the Moors, which they believed could bring them salvation, fame, and glory. He died in 1035.
