Benjamin T

Benjamin Thomas Biggs (1 October 1821 – 25 December 1893) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-DL) from 4 March 1869 to 3 March 1873 (succeeding John A. Nicholson and preceding James R. Lofland) and Governor of Delaware from 18 January 1887 to 20 January 1891 (succeeding Charles C. Stockley and preceding Robert J. Reynolds).

Biography[]

Benjamin Thomas Biggs was born in Cecil County, Maryland in 1821, and he served as a Major in the Delaware militia during the Mexican-American War before becoming a farmer in New Castle County. He was a Whig until the party's dissolution, upon which he joined the Democratic Party. He agreed with the party's Southern-leaning, anti-abolitionist, and states' rights platform, and he was narrowly defeated in his 1860 bid for US Congress, only to serve in the US House of Representatives from 1869 to 1873. He went on to serve as Governor from 1887 to 1891, achieving little due to partisan opposition. He died at his home in Middletown, Delaware in 1893 at the age of 72.
