Benjamin Stanton

Benjamin Stanton (4 June 1809-2 June 1872) was a member of the US House of Representatives (W-OH 4) from 4 March 1851 to 3 March 1853 (succeeding Moses Bledso Corwin and preceding Matthias H. Nichols) and from OH-8 from 4 March 1855 to 3 March 1861 (succeeding Corwin and preceding Samuel Shellabarger). Born in Mount Pleasant, he practiced law in Bellefontaine before serving in the state senate from 1841 to 1843, in Congress, and as Lieutenant Governor from 1862 to 1864, during which time he called for the execution of Ulysses S. Grant and Benjamin M. Prentiss for their performances at the Battle of Shiloh. His harsh criticisms of the Union generals led to his political demise, and he later settled in West Virginia and died in 1872.
