
Benjamin, Duke of Soubise (1580-1642) was a French nobleman and admiral and Huguenot leader during the French Wars of Religion.
Biography[]
Benjamin de Rohan was born in Brittany, France in 1580, the son of Rene II, Viscount of Rohan and the brother of Henri, Duke of Rohan. He served in Maurice of Nassau's army in the Netherlands during the Dutch Revolt before serving as a naval commander on France's western coast. He served as a Huguenot admiral during the French Wars of Religion, attacking a Royalist fleet on the River Blavet in 1625 and occupying the islands of Re and Oleron. Soubise served as a commander during the Siege of La Rochelle from 1627 to 1629, and he fled to England when surrender became inevitable. He died in exile in London in 1642.
