Benito Brasiliano

Benito Brasiliano (1669-) was a Brazilian pirate who was active in the Gulf of Mexico during the Golden Age of Piracy. Brasiliano was the captain of the galleon Profiteur, and he commanded a sizeable pirate fleet.

Biography[]

Benito Brasiliano was born in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil in 1669, and he served in the Portuguese Navy for a few years. Brasiliano later decided that it would be impossible to advance through the ranks of Portugal's navy without being of noble birth, and he decided to instead become a pirate. Brasiliano took advantage of Portugal's war with Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession to plunder Spanish Navy ships in the Caribbean, preying on Spanish vessels as they left their ports and entered the Gulf of Mexico. In 1700, Brasiliano and Charles Fleury teamed up to seize two Spanish Navy ships under Admiral Jose de Santillan between Cuba and Florida, with one of the ships, San Blas, being a fifth rate frigate.
