The Bengal Presidency was a colonial region of British Raj in South Asia that existed from 1765 to 1947, which includes the present-day country of Bangladesh, the Indian states of West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Meghalaya, Odisha and Tripura, Penang in Malaysia, and the city-state of Singapore. The rule of the British Empire in Bengal began with the purchase of Calcutta in 1698, and in 1765 the British made an agreement with the Nawab of Awadh and the Emperor of the Mughal Empire which gave the East India Company control over Bengal. The Bengal Presidency was dissolved in 1947 when it was partitioned between India and West Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh).
