Bengal is a culturally homogenous region of the eastern Indian Subcontinent, located around the Ganges-Brahmaputra deltas. Bengal was subjected to British rule in 1757, when the nawab dynasties of Bengal, Orissa, and Bihar were united into the single province and ruled from Calcutta. In 1905, Viceroy George Curzon divided the region into the Muslim-majority region of East Bengal (including Assam) and the richer West Bengal (including Orissa and Bihar). His action met violent opposition from Hindus, and East and West Bengal were united in 1911, with Assam, Bihar, and Orissa becoming separate provinces. During the Partition of India, East Bengal became a part of Pakistan and West Bengal became a part of India, and East Bengal gained independence as Bangladesh in 1971. In 2011, the region had a population of up to 300,000,000 people.
