The Belgian Foreign Legion was a volunteer unit created by Leopold II of Belgium in 1862 for usage in the French Intervention in Mexico in the name of his sister Charlotte of Belgium, who was the Empress of Mexico. It was commanded by Alfred van der Smissen. During the war, 1,462 Belgians fought and 573 were killed in action.
