China ethnic groups 1836

The ethnic groups of China in 1836; the different colors represent the majority groups in China's regions

The Beifaren are a cultural group in northern China, consisting of the northern populations of the Han Chinese people. A distinction between the northern Beifaren and southern Nanfaren developed during the rule of the Qing dynasty, with the northern Chinese being more receptive to Manchu rule than the southern Nanfaren. For this reason, the Nanfaren were persecuted by the Manchus, while the Beifaren were an accepted culture. This line of distinction would disappear soon after the Xinhai Revolution of 1911, but the northerners and southerners still have different traditions and ways of living today.
