The Beaver Hollow shootout occurred in 1899 when the Van der Linde Gang outlaws Arthur Morgan and Charles Smith attacked the Murfree Brood's hideout at Beaver Hollow near Knoxville in Johnson County, Arkansas. Smith and Morgan rode overland from their gang's former hideout of Lakay in Louisiana to Arkansas, where their gang's leader, Dutch van der Linde, had entrusted them with finding a new hideout location for the gang. Along the way, Morgan and Smith stealthily killed Elisha Murfree and Abram Murfree, and they proceeded to sneak up to the Beaver Hollow cave network, where they found that the Murfrees had set up camp. They then stealthily killed Abiathar Murfree and Uriah Murfree before Smith devised a plan to ambush the Murfrees in the cave. Both Smith and Morgan hurled dynamite into the cave, killing several Murfrees and initiating a shootout. The two men proceeded to move into the cave, with Morgan using his shotgun to help Smith clear the way. Morgan and Smith proceeded to gun down Elazar Murfree, Mordecai Murfree, Steven Murfree, Julian Murfree, Lemuel Murfree, Moshe Murfree, Elhanan Murfree, Jehoshua Murfree, Samson Murfree, Judah Murfree, Seth Murfree, Abdiel Murfree, and Laban Murfree, among others. After killing all of the Murfrees, they discovered a survivor, Meredith Buckley, who had been caged after enduring rape and physical assault; Morgan brought Buckley back to her mother, Etta Buckley, in Annesburg, ensuring that she arrived safe and sound, and kindly refusing payment. By the time he returned, the Van der Linde Gang had set up their caravan's camp at Beaver Hollow, which would serve as their longest-lasting camp until the gang's dissolution amid a shootout with the Pinkertons.
