Beaver Hollow

Beaver Hollow was a hollow located along the Arkansas River near Knoxville, Johnson County, Arkansas. During the late 19th century, the incestuous and murderous Murfree Brood used the caves of Beaver Hollow as their hideout, and, in 1899, the Van der Linde Gang outlaws Arthur Morgan and Charles Smith killed dozens of Murfrees in the hollow's caves and took over Beaver Hollow for use as the Van der Linde Gang's new (and final) hideout following the Battle of Lakay. It was at Beaver Hollow that the gang began to fall apart as its leader Dutch van der Linde, misguided by his lieutenant Micah Bell, devolved into insanity, and his gang members became split over whether to stay loyal to him or leave the gang. Bell, who was secretly an informant for the Pinkertons, tipped off the Pinkertons about the gang's hideout, leading to the Pinkertons storming the hideout later that year; in the ensuing shootout, the divided gang parted ways for good, with Arthur Morgan helping John Marston escape before dying of tuberculosis, and Bell taking the gang's stashed money for himself as he fled and started a new gang. Following the shootout, Beaver Hollow was once more abandoned to othe wild, and the Murfree Brood eventually returned and re-established their gang hideout by 1907.
