Beau Gray

Beau Gray (born 1882) was a member of the prominent Gray family of Caliga Hall, Louisiana during the late 19th century. He was best known for his affair with Penelope Braithwaite of the rival Braithwaite family.

Biography[]

Beau Gray was born at Caliga Hall, Assumption Parish, Louisiana in 1882, a son of Tavish Gray and the nephew of Leigh Gray. He was raised in a family of Scalawags who continued to farm tobacco and cotton at the plantation even after the American Civil War, but, as a young man, he grew disillusioned with his family's long-running rivalry with the Braithwaite family and fell in love with Penelope Braithwaite. In 1899, he enlisted the help of Arthur Morgan with protecting their affair, sending him to deliver a letter and bracelet to her, and later convincing him to protect her at a women's suffrage rally held by Olive Calhoon. Ultimately, he and Penelope decided to elope to Boston, and they were helped by Arthur in escaping via Riggs Station, setting out together and abandoning their feuding families.
