Bayou Fantom is a bayou marshland at the southern edge of New Orleans, Louisiana. Local legend claimed that the notorious gun runner Jean St. John was last seen navigating his ship The Grand Dame through the bayou during the War of 1812, and that a wronged voodoo queen cursed him and his ship to become ghosts in the bayou. Another notable story about the bayou was that of the Eaglehurst Plantation, an ancient plantation with no record of when it was founded or who built it; it was rumored that at least eight people were murdered there - it was still open to local day tours for years. The bayou was sparsely populated by impoverished Cajuns, and it was used as a base by the Dixie Mafia, which used it to traffic in marijuana, moonshine, weapons, and stolen goods. In 1968, Lincoln Clay took over the Eaglehurst Plantation as his base of operations.
