The Battle of the Red Barracks was fought between the German 295th Infantry Division, XIV Panzer Corps and the Soviet 482nd Composite Rifle Regiment, 131st Rifle Division in September 1942 during the Battle of Stalingrad. With the German 6th Army closing in on Stalingrad, its first units advanced into the city until they met with pockets of Russian resistance. The remnants of the 131st Rifle Division fell back to the Red Barracks, which had been destroyed by the Luftwaffe, with just rubble and slit-trenches as fortifications. The German 71st Infantry Division, which led the LI Armeekorps into the city, met resistance from the Bolsheviks at the Red Barracks, and the 295th Infantry Division was sent in to clear them out. The 131st Rifle Division was pinned down, surrounded, and destroyed in short order.
