The Battle of Vokkolia Fort was fought on 3 October 1943 amid the larger Battle of Kos.
The German Brandenburg Division's fallschirmjaegers, supported by infantrymen from the 22nd Infantry Division, were dispatched to secure the Vokkolia Fort in the north of Kos before attacking Kos harbor itself. The Germans advanced northeast from Marmari, with their paratroops traveling on half-tracks and the Heer soldiers charging on foot alongside them. The Germans utilized air support to create breaches in Vokkolia's walls, enabling the Germans to move in and wipe out the Italian defenders. However, the British Royal Air Force provided air support to the Royal Italian Army, taking out clusters of German soldiers in the fortress. Nevertheless, the Germans were able to press their advance on Kos town, facing Allied tanks along the way. German armor and air support helped the struggling infantry overcome this resistance, and it was not long before German soldiers were able to reach the bombed-out outskirts of Kos and force the remaining Italian defenders to surrender.
