The Battle of Udgir was a battle fought between the Maratha Confederacy and the Hyderabad State in 1760 during the Seven Years' War.
By 1758, the Hindu Maratha Empire reached its peak under the leadership of Balaji Baji Rao, and his brother Raghunath Rao, half-brother Shamsher Bahadur I, and cousin Sadashiv Rao Bhau were sent to capture the main stronghold of the rival Muslim Hyderabad State at Udgir. The Marathis engaged in a cannon duel with the Hyderabadis as Sadashiv Rao infiltrated the fortress, slaying five Hyderabadi warriors before opening the gates to the Marathis. On exiting the fort, Sadashivrao hurled a spear at the Hyderabadi flagpole, breaking it and signifying the fortress' fall. The Marathis recruited the captured Hyderabadi artillery general Ibrahim Khan Gardi into the Peshwa's army despite Raghunath's warning that members of the Gardi family were known for treachery, as Sadashivrao believed that Gardi would be useful as a commander of his captured artillery.
