The Battle of Tuaran occurred in 1695 when the pirate Captain Rija attacked a Dutch VOC merchant convoy off the north coast of Borneo.
VOC commanders failed to push back Vikram Rajan's Shadow Legion, forcing them to flee with their supplies and what was left of their pride. Captain Rija, commanding the Masina, intercepted the convoy north of Kampong Subur, using mortars to initiate the ambush. The Masina proceeded to blast the VOC merchantmen apart, destroying the convoy and stealing its treasures.
