The Battle of Square du Croisic occurred in 1944 when the French Resistance fighter Sean Devlin, aided by a British RAF fighter plane, inflicted heavy losses on the German Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS in an alleyway ambush in Montparnasse, Paris during World War II.
Devlin attracted the attention of the German occupation authorities after destroying a nearby rooftop anti-aircraft gun, forcing him to go on the run and attempt to evade his German pursuers. He ultimately found cover in an alleyway in Montparnasse, where he had his back to a courtyard and was protected from the side by a construction fence. This forced the Germans to funnel through a tight alleyway (made worse by nearby rubble piles), and they were unable to use their half-tracks' machineguns to overpower Devlin. Devlin inflicted heavy losses on several waves of German soldiers who attempted to kill him, and the Germans ultimately deployed their SS terror squads in an attempt to overpower Devlin. Devlin was able to use stick grenades to kill droves of the advancing Germans, and he was soon backed up by an RAF fighter plane which engaged in strafing runs against the German soldiers. Ultimately, Devlin was able to escape, having killed several Germans in the process.
