The Battle of Sepulturas was fought between Argentine Patriots and Spanish Royalists from the Upper Peru Army on 29 August 1814 during the Argentine War of Independence.
By late August 1814, a brief truce between Upper Peru and the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata expired, and warfare resumed along the Argentine-Bolivian frontier. On 29 August 1814, Sergeant-Major Joaquin Nazar and his Argentine army attacked a Royalist caravan on the move south of Tucuman. Galeano Moretti and his band of Patriot guerrillas joined Nazar's army in the middle of the action, overwhelming the Arequipa Dragoons and grenadiers guarding the caravan and killing or capturing all of them. Moretti's role in the victory endeared him to the Patriot cause, furthering his aspirations of becoming an officer.
