The Battle of San Jacinto was the final battle of the Texas Revolution, occurring on 21 April 1836 near La Porte, Texas. The Mexican army of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was divided into two halves after the Battle of the Alamo, as Santa Anna sought to outflank and destroy the Texian Army. However, Martin Perfecto de Cos' army was delayed during its march to rendezvous with Santa Anna at San Jacinto, and Sam Houston's Texian army of 910 troops decided to ambush Santa Anna's 1,360 troops during siesta (naptime) hour. The Mexicans were taken by surprise when Texian artillery opened fire on their positions, and Texian cavalry and troops stormed the Mexican camp. The Mexicans suffered heavy losses, with many of their troops being massacred while fleeing. Santa Anna was captured while attempting to hide in a marsh while wearing a dragoon's uniform, and he was forced to surrender to Houston. Santa Anna agreed to evacuate Texas and grant independence to a new "Republic of Texas" in exchange for his life, ending the revolution and establishing a new country.
