The Battle of Rodrigues occurred in 1695 when the pirate Captain Rija ambushed and destroyed a French Compagnie Royale supply convoy as it sailed from Mauritius to Pondicherry.
Compagnie soldiers needed wine and brandy to boost morale, and a French convoy set out from Madagascar to carry spirits to the Pondicherry garrison. Captain Rija, captaining the Masina, ambushed the convoy off Rodrigues, with a storm slowing the French convoy's movements. The Masina succeeded in destroying the French merchant ships, but it was not long before the pirate Shadow Legion arrived. Though the Shadow Legion failed to take the French fleet's goods for themselves, they still endeavored to destroy the French escorts and plunder Rija's wealth. Rija engaged in a hard-fought battle with the Shadow Legion, ultimately destroying their flagship Ranger and the rest of the fleet.
